For leadership and contributions to large-scale data visualization, the Association for Computing Machinery, or ACM, has named Distinguished Professor Kwan-Liu Ma to its 2023 cohort of fellows.  

The ACM Fellow is the international association's most prestigious member grade. It is reserved for the top one percent of society members, recognizing outstanding contributions in computing and information technology or service to ACM and the larger computing community. 

Alba won the Best Paper Award with the paper "Assessing in vivo label-free fluorescence lifetime Imaging sensitivity to low-grade colon inflammation”.

Saif Islam, an electrical and computer engineering professor and director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and Banatao Institute at the University of California, Davis, has received the 2024 SPIE Aden and Marjorie Meinel Technology Achievement Award.

A UC Davis Health team of surgeons and scientists has integrated a novel imaging technology with robotic surgical systems to help detect primary cancerous tissue during head and neck cancer surgeries. The technology, known as Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIm), allows surgeons to identify and remove malignant primary tumors more precisely and thoroughly.

Primary tumors are cells where the cancer first starts. It is important to locate these tumors for appropriate treatment and to improve the chance for cure.

The NCIBT team is delighted and proud to be featured in the Fall 2022 issue of Engineering Progress magazine.

A new center that stands to transform surgical procedures and brain monitoring on a national scale using light-based, artificial intelligence-informed technologies is now part of UC Davis thanks to the efforts of an interdisciplinary team led by Laura Marcu, professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Medical technologies and health practitioners need training before broad adoption can happen. This is a key component of the National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies planned for Aggie Square. The P41 grant from National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering was awarded in June. The next phase involves creating the infrastructure, says Marcu, who is also the founding director of NCIBT.

The National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies (NCIBT), part of a national network of engineers and clinician-scientists, hosted its inaugural symposium on the Davis campus on September 29 and 30.

The new center was established earlier this year with a prestigious $6.3 million P41 grant from NIH’s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.
